I believe that traditional physical therapy and rehabilitation practices often miss the mark when it comes to addressing the needs of strength-based athletes. Many individuals engaged in recreational strength training, kettlebell, powerlifting, Olympic weightlifting, strongman, and similar disciplines have likely already tried various rehabilitation strategies without success. The missing link in most rehab settings is a comprehensive assessment of the movements and programming that contributed to their painful injury — and, in many cases, to re-injury.

Consider this scenario: an individual walks into a physical therapy or rehabilitation clinic and undergoes an assessment, during which a professional provides some diagnosis. They receive treatment for their pain, along with a set of general exercises that may be somewhat related to their issue. They are given handouts, yet their squat, power clean, bench press, yoke/farmer's carries, and other sport-specific movements are not assessed. The instructions typically consist of "three sets of 10 reps for each exercise, and come back next week." The individual begins these exercises, possibly even halting their training out of fear of re-injury, and while they may feel somewhat "better," they never quite feel "right."

Unfortunately, this is a common experience for those seeking help with pain, yet it is rarely enough to improve their performance.

What should happen is this: each exercise should be thoroughly assessed, tested, adjusted, and specifically prescribed, including sets, reps, intensity, frequency, and overall volume that best supports their current training cycle. They should also be educated on how to continue training in a way that maximizes long-term progress.

This is where my approach differs. I integrate principles of physical therapy, strength and conditioning, and rehab programming to ensure that you recover as quickly as possible while maximizing your performance.

In addition to the standard treatments provided in physical therapy, such as manual therapy, soft tissue work, joint mobilizations/manipulations, and cupping, we will conduct a detailed analysis of your painful movements and evaluate your current training program. This will help us identify the factors that contributed to your injury, and allow us to make the necessary adjustments to ensure you continue getting stronger while recovering.
